Ambitious? Incautious more like!

Key’s had to dump the DVD Ambitious For NZ to avoid legal action around the controversial soundtrack. This is a major error and although it is being blamed on the production company, Key will have to take full responsibility (and presumably the creative will have documentary approval from the client should it be needed). To avoid taking responsibility will only exacerbate the matter. And while Farrar is already spinning that it was someone else’s fault, Key will surely know that as the front man, as the Leader, he must take responsibility. He was, afterall, the product on display.

Key is in danger of inheriting his predecessor’s Mr McGoo moniker. Having done well to broker a compromise over anti-smacking legislation, he’s stumbled all too often and must now be only an error or two away from a Caucus revolt. He increasingly appears simply too inexperienced to be effective. On occasions, he can look and sound credible, but there’s a shallowness that is all to easily exposed and an a tendency to say or do things without having thought them through thoroughly.

I applaud ambitious leadership but leadership is not just about glib one-liners. It’s not just about glossy imaging and carefully crafted set-piece speeches. It is also about judgment and attention to detail. It is hard work and often unglamorous. It requires experience and dedication as well as enthusiasm.

I believe John Key is ambitious for NZ. Every MP holds high aspirations for our country, however not all have the skills, commitment and experience to achieve those goals. Compared with Rudd, Key’s yet to paint himself as a real alternative to an experienced government and now goes to the Christmas break not only looking a little foolish but without any momentum for the new election year.

Key has been very generous to give such a christmas gift to Labour

  2. gruela Says:

Who’d have thought that his biggest Ambition for New Zealand would be to help get Labour re-elected.

  3. the sprout Says:

he’s obviously a very complex man

  4. outofbed Says:

Come back Bill all is forgiven

  5. mardypants Says:

Indeed. Bill will have to be wondering when the call will come and the numbers counted.

  6. outofbed Says:

Re Bill I wonder if he has the numbers ?

  7. gruela Says:

Hopefully not too early. About three months out from the election would be ideal, methinks.

  8. the sprout Says:

it’ll happen sooner or later. if National had the guts to stick with him the first time round he might be PM now.

  9. gruela Says:

I believe he’s a fairly conservative christian, is that right?

  10. mardypants Says:

I think he’ll be saved by good polling. I suspect wise heads will be worried that he’s so error prone in a benign environment but will be out-numbered by less experienced members who’re focused on popularity. In an tight election, one slip up is all that’s needed.

  11. outofbed Says:

he must be be really pissed at the moment

  12. mardypants Says:

Gruela, that’s not my understanding - I thought, but could be wrong, he’s pretty garden variety in his religious views.

[Zos says: I thought he's a declared "no particular religious views" - so garden variety agnostic (either Christian or Jewish) or an atheist but can't afford to be too upfront because of his more conservative constituency. Anyone else know?]

  13. gruela Says:

    Well, that’s alright then.

  14. the sprout Says:

yes Bill is a conservative catholic, but hardly a fundy.

yes JK will be pissing blood right now, over all sorts of mignons.

yes the puppeteers will be beginning to wonder how the error-prone key will handle a truely hostile environment.

yes National MPs that aren’t Johnny Come Latelies will be talking to each other and sharpening their knives - but they’ll keep them hidden for a while yet

  15. mardypants Says:

The sprout’s sorted it - gruela, I was talking about Key but sorry I misunderstood. Yes English is a pretty conservative Catholic - thanks sprout.

  16. the sprout Says:

“[Key is] so garden variety agnostic (either Christian or Jewish) or an atheist but can’t afford to be too upfront because of his more conservative constituency”

a bit like he can’t remember if he supported the Springbok Tour or not.

    JK’s media release, last week:

“Over the next few weeks, I’ll be travelling to around 40 towns throughout the country to introduce myself to as many people as possible. I’ll be handing out the DVD wherever I go.

I encourage you to tell your friends about it so that they also have the opportunity to get to know me a little better.”

(And then, like the tax cuts, I’ll be taking it back off you again …)

  18. gruela Says:

Personally, I’d rather have an agnostic Libertarian as PM than a conservative Catholic. At least Libs believe in free-thinking.

  19. outofbed Says:

I’d rather have a progressive atheist

  20. gruela Says:

Not a fan of Atheism. It’s just as bad as any other belief.

Maybe the Nats saw this article, and didn’t notice the date of it?

In a coup for the Conservatives, the lead singer of Coldplay, Chris Martin, has declared his backing for David Cameron, releasing a song that the party hopes will become the Tory answer to Labour’s 1997 anthem, Things Can Only Get Better.

In the new lyric, on which the two men collaborated, Martin outlines some of his reasons for joining the Tories: Mr Cameron’s habit of travelling by bicycle, and the way he dresses like members of Coldplay’s fanbase, in casual clothes and trainers sourced, where possible, from Fairtrade outlets.

Mr Cameron hopes more British bands will follow where Coldplay has led the way, creating a Tory version of the socialist bands-for-Labour movement organised by Billy Bragg in the early 1990s

  22. gruela Says:

Okay, how long before we see Key riding a bike up to parliament? Taking bets now….

  23. outofbed Says:

How long before we see Key “on his bike” away from parliament ?

  24. outofbed Says:

    I am not stalking you

  25. gruela Says:

Couldn’t blame you if you were.

  26. Wat Tyler Says:

    awesome title, mardy.

  27. mardypants Says:

well there’s a nice symmetry with an earlier one yeah…

  28. Wat Tyler Says:

I like symmetry, all kinds of patterns, and shiny things.
