What’s your sexual orientation Davey?

… actually, don’t - I’ve no need to hear about it.

Davey’s new polling feature has followed a predictably sad trajectory with the latest on his readership’s sexual orientation (oddly “frustrated” isn’t an option). Sure he’s had them on global warming, national policy (both of them), the best and worst third- or minor-party but why is he interested in his readership’s sexual orientation or whether they fancy Scarlett Johanson?

I suspect it’s simply a device to amuse his readership, kinda like how Zoos provide noisy toys for the chimps, and Davey frequently proclaims his own open-mindedness, but I can’t help but think it’s gone beyond quirky and is heading dangerously close to bizarre. What’s next I wonder?

Anyone filling in online survey’s should realise that their IP address can be tracked - most don’t care - but they would be quite wrong to expect that Davey’s tolerant attitude is shared by D4J, Redbaiter or any one of the numerous trolls who hang-out at the ‘bog

Can I ask the same question of Klark?

  2. mardypants Says:

Surely you’re missing the point - it’s spurious.

I wanted to vote for option (g) - none of your fucking business - but as that wasn’t a possibility, I’ve just pottered around voting for any option that takes my fancy (as it were).
I think the problem here is Kiwiblog *tries* too hard - it wants to be an insightful, trenchant, cutting edge political blog AND a whimsical, deprecatingly humourous, slice-of-life personal blog.
I’m interested in the politics, even if I agree with very little that’s posted. I really couldn’t care less about the rest.

  4. mardypants Says:

Fair summary wheronui. I think Davey occassionally provides more insight into his interests than is healthy… for him or for readers.

I thought of the privacy issue when I saw that, too.

It could be an attempt to claim the blog has a diverse readership…instead of just the angry, middle-aged, white, hetero, sexist, talkback radio redneck male demographic. ;-)

  6. robynekenealy Says:

I agree with Ruth! You know, because as we discussed earlier, DPF’s non-prejudiced conduct is beyond reproach ;)

    What about the transgender options?

On this vein, great news from the California Supreme Court! And to think that six out of seven of them are Republicans.

  8. mardypants Says:

Tell us more jafa - it’s not something I’m aware of and from what little you’ve said, not something I imagine Davey will blog about?

What I find particularly interesting about the new polls feature is that Farrar runs a polling company for his day job, and will be very very cogniscent of the worthlessness of these online polls. Yet he promotes them and I’m sure would not be above using the result if it was useful to him.

  10. jafapete Says:

    mardy,
All I meant was that Farrar missed out transgender, but maybe it gets a bit too complicated when you try to configure all those permutations.

On the lack of external validity, Julie, Farrar has acknowledged that the polls have absolutely no validity. They’re just fun, he says. So, no, I don’t think that he’d ever try to pass them off as meaning anything.

They give you a very accurate picture of the type of person who frequents kiwiblog and can be arsed with worthless “fun” polls — no more, no less.

most likely answer: a ‘menage a un’.

hmmm, this blog is beginning to run out of steam a bit.

The electoral writing is on the wall?

Don’t you have something more interesting to talk about?

Ooooooo-kay. And this has what to do with the price of fish?

BB- we already know that Clark is either straight or has gone to ridiculous lengths to hide it. For someone with pretty gay-friendly policies for a New Zealand politician, she’s unlikely to have an incentive to hide her orientation either way.

I also think it’s amusing that so many people actually stated anything either than heterosexuality on Kiwiblog.

If I had implemented polls, I’d personally be asking if people were bisexual, gynosexual or androsexual just to shake things up. :P

  15. expatexpat Says:

Jesus, this place is a sociopath creation from hell.

Do you get out of the house much mardy? Is seems not. Black helicopters are coming to get us all…..

Ari - we know clark is straight? puhrlease. she is as bent as an immigration official.

npog - we agree for a change ;)

  16. mardypants Says:

expatexpat, WTF are you on about. If you’re going to be either critical or even insulting, you might want to be a bit more specific… are you saying any of the following:

    (a) it’s great fun to participate in Dolly-like sexual orientation surveys on a political blog, it breaks up the biting analysis with personal information that helps me deal with the difficult parts of my life

    (b) a person’s sexual orientation largely defines their position on political issues; fags are left, blokes are right and girls should best leave politics alone

    (c) sometime when I visit the ‘bog, although I’m arguing about political matters, it’s really like I’m ahem getting some relief…

  17. robynekenealy Says:

Come on, Mardy, you’re missing extexpat’s salient point! Any woman who occupies a position of power is *obviously* a lesbian, otherwise she’d be acting in an appropriate politics-avoidy way so as to properly serve the menfolk! Oh, and also, lesbians are hellbent on the destruction of the true world order! ( See: properly serving the menfolk.) They have an organisation I’m told. ;)

(Damn, I hate that this isn’t comic books so I could draw the pointy jagged speech bubble that would indicate what I just wrote was sarcasm. I had to make do with that winky face.)

  18. imcheezy Says:

I guess Davey’s poll was fairly appropriate really, bearing in mind that much of his readership seem to have a rather unhealthy interest in people’s sexual preferences. Some of them are no better than a bunch of panty (or Y front) sniffers, if you ask me.

Having said that, surely Davey should have presented the following option tp his readership:

“Identify as heterosexual - but use aggression, sweary language, dogmatic right-wing views and even overt homophobia as methods to combat these strange, confusing homosexual urges….”

Honesty surely would have prevailed upon some of them to click that option!

  19. robby110 Says:

cheez- and your point about sniffing panties would be…………….? (jagged voice bubble).

  20. jafapete Says:

Funniest thing, sort of on thread, DPF’s latest poll is currently led by a (former) Labour Prime Minister!

If I were to say exactly which one, and he were to come first, they might say we rigged it, so I won’t.

I was pleased to see that my vote (probably the first or second time I’ve voted in one of DPF’s polls, I hasten to add) was for this very same PM.

Anyway, it might be worth voting this time, just in case the former Labour PM should win, and piss off the kiwiblog right.

  21. imcheezy Says:

“and your point about sniffing panties would be…………….?

I thought my point was obvious. It’s that it’s not something I care to do, either in a literal or a figurative sense!

Moreover, I find this right-wing obsession with the PM’s sexuality to be creepy in the extreme. Wishart’s the worst. Get a (sex) life of your own, god-boy!
